Smartphone question below; ritual offering of photograph featuring car. I don't have White Noise access, so I'm subjecting you to this.

Kinja'd!!!

I'm finally about to move to a mobile cellular telephone with computer-like functionality, something you kids refer to as a "smartphone." I'm thinking of getting an unlocked Nexus 5 with Straight Talk, thoughts? Reasoning below.

I want a high-value device on a cheap soft-cap or unlimited network with coverage in many rural areas; the brown diesel manual wagon of electronics. In the past few weeks I had seriously considered an HTC One, but now Google releases the very similar Nexus 5 for almost half the price. I don't think there's a catch, but if so, I'm hoping you'll inform me otherwise.

As for networks, my desire for rural coverage means my only realistic contract options are AT&T and Verizon, both of which are too expensive. Verizon even charges $40 per month just for the privilege of having a smartphone with them, then you get to pay for the plan. Being limited to Verizon and AT&T also limits my no-contract options to AT&T Go Phone and Straight Talk. Straight Talk is cheaper and has a higher soft data cap than Go Phone's hard cap, so Straight Talk is my current choice.

I know the Nexus just released today and the first batch will sell out, but if I have to wait a few weeks, I can.

Thank you!

Verizon's network is probably the best of anyone's—excellent coverage and "obamanotbad.jpg" network speed. Not all Straight Talk phones use Verizon's towers, so be careful.

But $40 a month for the mere privilege of being a Verizon customer?

But some Straight Talk phones use Verizon's towers exclusively. You don't get the full network, but it's still Verizon coverage for a cheaper price.

Sounds like you have a plan. I have tried all the carriers and currently am on SPRINT. AT&T pissed me off with terrible support, Verizon pissed me off with terrible support, people, pricing, random fees, and being generally awful. I am really considering just moving to Ting and giving it a try...

I have the Nexus 4 with Straight Talk. I have no complaints.
